Paul McGann starred in Doctor
Who: Enemy Within. Mcgann brings a classic feeling back to the
character. His timing as an actor is wonderful. Combining elements of
all the past doctors, he is as intelligent as he is funny. He's also
witty, scatterbrained and wears eccentric clothing.
The flavour of the Doctor is not lost in this telefilm despite its poor
ratings (Both in the U.S. and U.K.) and mediocre storyline. Another great
thing about the new doctor is he still has all of his toys. He carries the
sonic screwdriver and his trusty yo-yo. Although, they are lost in the
very beginning only to be given back at the end of the film. Before the
film first aired I was worried that they would lose the overall feel of
Doctor Who. It was to be shot in San Fransisco (Vancouver, Canada) and
the Master would not be an English actor. This bothered me, because I so
much enjoy the panache brought to the character through his inflection of
the British accent. The fact they chose San Francisco as the first
location for a Doctor Who Movie was disappointing. It turns out I enjoyed
the film despite my fears, and there was one particular scene where Grace
Holloway, an American M.D. points out,"He's British," to which the Doctor
replies, "Yes, I suppose I am." Even though he is alien to our world,
and all of the Timelords of the High Council seem to have similar accents,
the line brings a bit of humour to the film.
As of this moment, there is much conjecture as to whether or not
there will be a future for Doctor Who. A Response from FOX on the May 96 telefilm at least
indicates that FOX will most certainly not be involved. Arguably one of
the best, it is frustrating to see this film and know that there is
virtually no chance of a sequal. For now, books will have to take the
imagination to visit McGann's Doctor. And as for McGann himself, he is a
fine actor and will have no problem finding work elsewhere. In fact, if
you're interested in pursuing some of Paul's latest projects, you can find
out more by visiting: P.M.E.B. "The Paul
McGann Estrogen Brigade", a slightly over-the-top fanclub. In addition
to the PMEB site, more information is available on the 8th Doctor by
